In short

Animals in Black (AiB) is the Italian photography project founded in 2015 by Gian Luca Partengo. It brings together original photographs of real animals portrayed against a black background and their fine-art prints on Hahnemühle paper. 10% of each print’s value is allocated to conservation. Gian Luca Partengo

Turin, 1972 · Photographer since 2010 · Founder of AiB in 2015

Gian Luca Partengo was born in Turin in 1972. He came to photography in 2010 and, over time, developed a passion for black and white, refining a personal style that unites his love for nature and animals.

From this vision Animals in Black was born, a project into which he pours all his experience, creating a unique artistic genre. The message is clear: animals are real, they live on this planet together with us and deserve attention and respect.

The vision

Art and giving for species at risk

The extinction of animal species is a fragile and urgent matter. Animals in Black (AiB) began in 2015 as a small drop of hope in a stormy sea: a simple gesture, but strong enough to believe in.

All Animals in Black photographs were taken in wildlife parks across Northern Italy. The original location and background are not the subject of the story: the animal’s face, muzzle and posture remain at the centre. Each image is developed through an original post-production process created by Gian Luca Partengo, which isolates the subject against black and focuses its expression without altering its identity.
